Dolphin Boats
Sunrise trips (November–April) to see spinner dolphins by the hundreds. The reliable family favourite.
Home / Stay / Family Holiday
Kite lessons for the brave. Dolphins, pool and crab hunts for everyone else.
Valampuri is a family-run resort, and it shows: children can learn kitesurfing from age 8 in waist-deep lagoon water, the ones who'd rather not have a pool, a garden and boat trips, and the family rooms keep everyone under one roof.
Kalpitiya works well for family holidays. At Valampuri Resort, children from age 8 can take IKO kite lessons in the flat, waist-deep lagoon — with radio helmets, one-on-one instruction and a rescue boat always on the water. Non-kiting kids and parents have a swimming pool, garden, dolphin watching, kayaking, snorkelling, and Wilpattu safari day trips. The Family Eco Chalet and Garden Family Suite are built for families, and the restaurant cooks both Sri Lankan rice and curry and the burgers your kids will actually eat.
Kids on the water
We've taught students from age 8 to 65+, and kids are often the quick ones: lighter bodies, no fear, and kite control that clicks fast. What makes the lagoon right for them:
Parents learning too? Group lessons (€40/hr) work well for a parent-and-teen pair. See how many hours learning takes to plan your trip length.
Off the water

A leopard-and-sloth-bear day trip to Sri Lanka's largest national park.
A swimming pool in a shaded coconut garden — the default afternoon for smaller kids.
Calm, flat water made for first paddles, plus mangrove boat tours.
Evening crab hunts on the shore and snorkelling trips — simple, sandy, memorable.
Anawilundawa bird sanctuary nearby, and Kalpitiya's famous free-roaming donkeys in town.
Sleep
Two of our rooms are built specifically for families: the Family Eco Chalet and the Garden Family Suite. Both sit in the same garden as the pool, restaurant and kite school, so children move between all of them without crossing a road.
The restaurant handles fussy eaters honestly — the menu runs from Sri Lankan rice and curry to burgers, fried rice and fresh juices.
Only one parent kiting? That's the most common family setup here — see what non-kiters do in Kalpitiya.
Questions
At Valampuri's IKO kite school, children can start from age 8, subject to a quick swim-confidence check with the instructor. Lessons are one-on-one with radio helmets, in flat waist-deep water, with a rescue boat always on the lagoon.
The learning area is flat, sandy-bottomed and waist-deep, so children can stand at any time. There are no waves, no reef and no strong current, and instruction is one-on-one. Kids swimming or kayaking stay in the same protected lagoon.
Yes — the Family Eco Chalet and the Garden Family Suite are both designed for families, in the same garden as the pool, restaurant and kite school. Tell us ages and numbers on WhatsApp and we'll recommend the right fit.
The pool and garden, sunrise dolphin boats (November–April), kayaking, snorkelling, crab hunting, the Anawilundawa bird sanctuary, Kalpitiya's wild donkeys, and Wilpattu safari day trips. Most families mix one or two boat trips with slow pool days.
The two wind seasons are May–September (stronger wind) and December–March (gentler wind, plus dolphin season). December–March suits most families best: lighter wind for young learners and dolphins in the bay.
Bring the whole crew
We'll suggest rooms, a lesson plan for the learners, and a week of everything else for the rest.
