Home / About Valampuri
Small by design. Family-run since 2016. The kind of place where the instructors remember yesterday's session and the kitchen cooks for you, not at you.
Quick Answer
Valampuri is a family-run kite resort on Kalpitiya Lagoon, open since 2016. The kite school has been IKO-affiliated since 2017, has taught 500+ students, and the resort holds 600+ verified guest reviews. It's intentionally small: eight room types across a 10,000 m² lagoon-side property, so guests and staff get to know each other by name.
Our Story
The word “Valampuri” comes from the Tamil language and names a rare shell that spirals to the right, when almost every other shell spirals left. A small, rare thing from these waters — that felt like the right name for this place.
Valampuri Resort (also known as Valampuri Kite Resort on Google, TripAdvisor, and Booking.com) began as a simple idea in Kalpitiya: create a place where guests could stay close to the lagoon, learn kitesurfing, eat well, slow down, and feel connected to nature.
It stayed small on purpose. Not because we couldn't grow: because a certain kind of guest doesn't want to be one of two hundred. They want to arrive and be known by name within a day. They want the instructor who taught them yesterday to be at breakfast. They want a kitchen that asks if you have preferences, not one that slides a menu under your door.
Our History
Valampuri opened in 2016 as a small family project on the shore of Kalpitiya Lagoon. The first guests were kitesurfers who wanted to sleep next to the water they rode. Word spread the slow way: reviews, returning guests, friends of friends.
The property grew carefully: a pool, a seafood kitchen, more garden. What did not change is the size. Valampuri stayed small on purpose, because being known by name within a day is the whole point.
The People
Read the reviews and you will keep seeing the same thing: names. The instructor who taught the first waterstart, the person in the kitchen who remembered a food allergy, the uncle who told the story of the Valampuri shell. That is what a small team looks like from the guest side.
Jeevan, our Head Kite Instructor, leads the school: IKO-certified teaching, walkie-talkie coaching on the water, and honest answers about the wind. The rest of the team covers the kitchen, the garden, the boats, and everything between.
Long-time guests may remember Sangu Mama ("Shell Uncle"), part of the Valampuri story from the early days and the reason the shell means so much here.
What Valampuri offers
Valampuri brings together accommodation, an IKO-affiliated kite school, seafood restaurant, swimming pool, lagoon access, and nature-based experiences.
Simple, relaxed accommodation close to Kalpitiya Lagoon: chalets, cabanas, family rooms, dorm.
Fresh seafood, Sri Lankan rice and curry, juices, and relaxed resort dining by the lagoon.
Pool, garden, lagoon air, wildlife trips, and slower days away from city noise.
Our philosophy
Valampuri is for people who plan their days around wind and water. Kite until your arms give out, swim, eat the day's catch, sleep under coconut palms, repeat. We keep the resort small — 42 guests at most — because that pace only works when nobody is queueing for anything.
Our direction
We are not trying to be a loud luxury hotel. Valampuri is a small resort built around kitesurfing, the lagoon, and slowing down.
View SustainabilityReal Kalpitiya moments
Most people arrive thinking this trip is about kitesurfing. They leave telling people about the dolphins they saw before breakfast, the leopard in Wilpattu, the evening they sat by the lagoon with fresh crab and nothing else to do. The kite was the reason to come. Everything else is what they remember.
