Kalpitiya wind guide

Two seasons, one lagoon, warm water all year.

Most kite destinations give you one good season. Kalpitiya gives you two (a powerful summer and a softer winter), both on the same flat, shallow lagoon right in front of Valampuri.

Summer wind builds from mid-May, peaks through June to August, and tapers off by late October. Winter wind picks up from mid-December, settles into steady afternoon sessions through January and February, and starts fading by late March.

Summer Season

May to September

Wind: 18–30+ knots · Southwest monsoon

This is the strongest and most consistent wind season in Kalpitiya. The southwest monsoon creates powerful conditions almost every day. The lagoon comes alive from morning until sunset.

Perfect for

  • Intermediate riders
  • Advanced riders
  • Fast progression
  • Downwinders
  • Freestyle sessions
  • Long riding days

Best for

Vella Island trips, Dream Spot sessions, kite safaris, and sunset downwinders.

Summer wind can be gusty in Kalpitiya Lagoon on stronger days. Beginners should ride with instructor guidance.

Winter Season

December to March

Wind: 15–25 knots · Northeast thermal

Winter season is calmer, softer, and incredibly beginner-friendly. The northeast wind creates stable conditions that feel comfortable and manageable, even for first-time riders.

Ideal for

  • Beginners
  • First-time riders
  • Couples
  • Relaxed progression
  • Mixed holidays
  • Nature trips

Good time for

Combining lessons with dolphin watching, a Wilpattu safari, and slower garden days at the resort.

Outside the main wind seasons

What about the low-wind months?

April, October and November are less reliable for kitesurfing. These months can still be beautiful for slow travel, pool time, seafood, nature, lagoon views, wellness, kayaking, dolphin watching in season, and quiet stays.

If your main goal is kitesurfing, choose the main wind seasons. If your goal is rest, nature and a peaceful resort escape, the quieter months can still be lovely.

Season FAQ

Season questions answered

Last updated: July 2026

When is the best time to visit Kalpitiya?

For kitesurfing: May–September for strong wind, or December–March for gentler conditions. For a mixed holiday, December–March is the sweet spot: the gentler kite season overlaps with dolphin season (November–April). April, October and November are the quietest, most affordable months, best for rest-focused stays.

When is the best time to kitesurf in Sri Lanka?

The main kite seasons are May to September (southwest monsoon, stronger wind) and December to March (northeast thermal, lighter wind). Both seasons are reliable for kitesurfing in Kalpitiya.

What are the best months in Kalpitiya?

June to August (summer, 20–28+ knots) and January to February (winter, 14–18 knots) are the most reliable months. July and August typically have the strongest, most consistent wind.

Does Kalpitiya have two kite seasons?

Yes. Kalpitiya is one of few destinations worldwide with two distinct wind seasons driven by the southwest monsoon (May–Sept) and northeast monsoon (Dec–Mar). This gives it roughly 8 months of kiteable wind per year.

What wind strength can I expect?

Summer (May–Sept): 18–30+ knots, typical 20–28 knots, kite sizes 7–10 m. Winter (Dec–Mar): 15–25 knots, typical 14–18 knots, kite sizes 11–14 m.

Which season is best for beginners?

Both seasons work. Winter (December–March, 14–18 knots typical) is often gentler. Summer (May–September, 20–28 knots) offers faster progression. Valampuri's instructors match kite sizes (7–14 m) to conditions.

Can I kitesurf all year in Kalpitiya?

Wind exists outside the main seasons, but April, October, and November are transition months with less reliable conditions. During these months, Valampuri guests enjoy lagoon tours, dolphin watching, kayaking, Wilpattu safari, and pool time.

What summer feels like

Warm wind. Long sunny days. Salt on your skin all day.

Tired arms. Quiet evenings after riding until sunset. A lot of people come here for “a kitesurfing trip”, then stay longer because life suddenly feels simpler.

Transition months

April, October, and November are quieter.

Wind can still work, especially for foiling, freeriding, and relaxed sessions. But conditions are less predictable. If you are flexible and enjoy quieter travel periods, these months can still be beautiful.

Which season is best?

Choose by your level and the feeling you want.

If you are a beginner

Come between December and March for a softer, calmer learning atmosphere.

If you want strong wind

Come between May and September for powerful days, progression, trips, and downwinders.

If you want kitesurfing and relaxation

Either season works. It depends on the energy you are looking for.

Why ride in Kalpitiya?

  • Warm water all year
  • Large shallow lagoon
  • Reliable wind seasons
  • Safe beginner conditions
  • Multiple kite spots nearby
  • Boat access to remote locations
  • Relaxed atmosphere away from crowded tourist zones

And honestly, the sunsets after a long session are hard to explain properly until you sit on the jetty yourself.
