Wilpattu national park and copper sand safari
Enjoy the wildlife adventure with the historical Aryan prince Vijaya’s landing point
Wilpattu is Sri Lanka's largest and oldest national park. Its name derives from the Tamil language: 'willu' means lakes and 'pattu' means ten. According to Sri Lankan history in Mahawansa, the Aryan prince Vijaya landed at Copper Sand and found Princess Kuveni. This location was earlier known as 'Thambapanni'.
wilpattu is renowned for its leopard’s population.
During the civil war, Wilpattu was closed for a period of 16 years, and only 25% of the park is accessible due to dense forest or scrub.
In 1905, the area was designated a sanctuary, and in 1938 it was upgraded to National Park status. 31 species of mammals have been identified within Wilpattu, most of which are listed as endangered, such as elephants, sloth bears, leopards, water buffaloes, spotted deer, sambar deer, and many species of monkeys. Other species include crocodiles, pythons, and monitor lizards.
